Varun Suri: Acting, Writing, Reinventing — A Journey of Passion, Perseverance and Purpose

From engineering to theatre, television, films and filmmaking, Varun Suri’s journey reflects the power of passion, patience and persistence. Featured as the cover personality of The Fashion Fusion, Varun opens a window into the experiences that shaped him as an actor, writer and filmmaker.

From Engineering to Entertainment - Varun Suri

Before the arc lights and red carpets, Varun Suri was an engineering student at M.I.T. College. As a certified mechanical engineer, he could have followed a conventional path of designing machines, but his passion eventually led him toward a completely different world — entertainment.

While studying, Varun became associated with the theatre society at Jamia Millia Islamia, where he performed in Urdu and Hindi plays. Theatre introduced him to the power of observation, listening and emotional expression, giving him the confidence to step into the world of professional performance.

“Theatre taught me to observe, to listen, and to feel. Once I stepped on stage, there was no turning back.”

His first brush with the camera came in 2010 with Kya Haal Hai Jeeja Ji, followed by Insanyat on DD Urdu. These early opportunities became the first chapters of a journey that would take him from theatre and television toward cinema and filmmaking.

The Face That Found Fame

In 2011, Varun became a familiar face through the much-loved MDH Masala commercial, which received extensive television exposure across India. His growing visibility was followed by campaigns for Microtek Inverter and several other brands.

His acting journey also included appearances in Anjan Baan Niranjan and Mahaveer Jain, with his performances earning recognition at the Best Actor Awards in 2012 and 2013.

For Varun, however, recognition was never simply about becoming a familiar face. Every project offered another opportunity to understand his craft, gain experience and move forward as an artist.

That success made one thing clear — Varun Suri wasn't just acting; he was building a career.

The Mumbai Chapter

With recognition came ambition, and Varun moved to Mumbai to explore mainstream television and expand his presence in the entertainment industry.

His television journey includes appearances in shows such as Diya Aur Baati Hum, Jodha Akbar, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Singhasan Battisi, Paramavatar Shree Krishna and Naagin 3.

Each project brought a different character, setting and emotional landscape. From mythological roles to modern-day characters, Varun approached his performances with an emphasis on understanding the character and bringing sincerity to every role.

“Every character has a heartbeat. My job is to listen to it.”

For Varun, acting is about more than simply portraying a character. It is about understanding the emotions behind the role and creating a performance that connects with the audience.

A Writer and Filmmaker Emerges

Varun's creative journey expanded further during the lockdown period when he turned his attention toward writing and filmmaking.

He wrote the screenplay and lyrics for the 2023 feature film Auhaam, while also portraying Inspector Yashwant Gaur, a complex character involved in a suspenseful missing-person case.

The psychological depth of the film gave Varun an opportunity to explore storytelling from multiple creative perspectives. His work on the project extended beyond acting, allowing him to contribute as a writer and lyricist.

He subsequently worked on Thandak (Cold), continuing his involvement in thought-provoking cinema.

His creative credits also include IshqbanI and Mantrat, along with the haunting title track Auhaam Hai Kya.

Passion and Philosophy

Behind Varun Suri's professional journey is a philosophy centred on learning, preparation and patience.

When asked what drives him, his perspective is simple:

“If you want to swim in the ocean, learn in the rivers first.”

For Varun, every struggle is an opportunity to prepare for something greater. He believes that patience and preparation are among the true hallmarks of an artist.

His message for aspiring artists reflects the same philosophy:

“Start small, gain confidence, and respect the process. Don’t chase shortcuts; chase improvement.”

His own career mirrors this belief. From engineering and theatre to television, cinema, writing and filmmaking, every stage has contributed something to his artistic development.

The Man Behind the Spotlight

Despite his professional accomplishments, Varun remains grounded in the values that have guided his journey.

For him, success is not defined only by fame or recognition. Meaningful work, personal fulfilment and the ability to connect with audiences remain central to his understanding of success.

“Success, for me, is not in fame, but in fulfillment. When people connect with your work, it’s the purest reward. Stay true to your craft — the rest follows.”

His journey demonstrates how passion can lead an individual beyond the boundaries of an original career path. What began with engineering gradually transformed through theatre, television and cinema into a broader creative journey.

More Than an Actor

Varun Suri's evolution has been defined by his willingness to explore different sides of storytelling.

Actor. Performer. Writer. Lyricist. Filmmaker.

Each role has added another dimension to his creative identity.

Rather than limiting himself to a single medium, Varun has continued to explore opportunities across performance and storytelling. His transition from acting to writing and filmmaking reflects a desire to understand and participate in the creative process from multiple sides.

From an engineering classroom to the theatre stage, from television screens to feature films, and from acting to writing and filmmaking, his career continues to evolve through new experiences and creative challenges.

“Stay true to your craft — the rest follows.”

Varun Suri continues to write, perform and create, with his journey remaining a work in progress — one chapter at a time.
