Xiaomi is preparing to introduce a major display upgrade with its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro series, with the company confirming a new Super Pixel 2.0 display featuring built-in hardware-level privacy protection.

What Is Xiaomi's Smart Privacy Display?

The Smart Privacy Display works at the pixel level rather than simply applying a software filter.

According to Xiaomi's explanation, the panel uses two alternating sets of pixels: standard wide-angle pixels and dedicated privacy pixels equipped with microscopic physical baffles. When normal display mode is active, both sets operate together. When privacy mode is enabled, the standard pixels switch off and the privacy pixels remain active.

The result is intended to keep the display clearly visible to the person looking directly at it while significantly reducing visibility from the sides.

Xiaomi says brightness from viewing angles beyond 60 degrees can fall to roughly 1% of the front-facing output when privacy mode is active.

Full RGB Pixels Aim to Preserve Display Quality

One of the more interesting aspects of Xiaomi's implementation is its full RGB subpixel arrangement.

Unlike Diamond or Pentile arrangements used by some competing displays, Xiaomi says its Super Pixel 2.0 panel uses a full RGB structure. The company has also highlighted a new green light-emitting material that it says improves luminous efficiency by around 20% compared with the previous generation.

Privacy Mode Can Be Triggered in Multiple Ways

Xiaomi isn't limiting privacy protection to a single manual switch.
