New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to stay the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi in the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case. However, the apex court has agreed to hear the Meghalaya government's challenge against the bail order and has issued notice in the matter.
A Bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu observed that it had prima facie reservations regarding the Meghalaya High Court's decision to grant bail. Despite these observations, the Court declined to suspend the bail since Sonam Raghuvanshi had already been released and was complying with the conditions imposed by the court.
Representing the State of Meghalaya, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the allegations were extremely serious and that the High Court had erred in granting bail. He urged the Supreme Court to stay the order immediately, but the Bench refused interim relief and decided to examine the matter in detail during the next hearing.
The case has attracted nationwide attention since Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore, was allegedly murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025. According to investigators, Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband. She has denied all allegations, and the criminal trial is currently pending before the competent court.
The Supreme Court clarified that its latest order does not decide the merits of the criminal case. Sonam Raghuvanshi will continue to remain on bail while the apex court examines the legality of the Meghalaya High Court's decision in the upcoming hearings. The final verdict will be based on the evidence and legal arguments presented before the Court.
